The House of the Seven Gables
By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Garden City, New York: International Collectors Library.
This is a hard cover book that is in Mint condition. This is an excellent piece of literature enjoyed by millions. The binding on the book is The William Morris Binding with Gilt decorations (leaves and acorns) and lettering on the spine and front cover. Dark blue covers with blind stamped ornate decorations with, a satin purple place ribbon 298 pages. No stated publication date. The book is clean and tight pages with no markings in the book.
Nathaniel Hawthorne was happily married to Sophia Peabody, daughter of a distinguished New England family. A position in the Boston custom house afforded them a living, although tallying barrow-loads of coal at the wharves hardly served to inspire Nathaniel’s literary talents.
The story of The House of the Seven Gables is the story of a family curse falling upon succeeding generations –a theme of peculiar personal interest to Hawthorne. His own great grandfather, after sentencing a woman to the scaffold for witchcraft, had been similarly cursed; and as the Hawthorne’s’ sank from prosperity to genteel poverty they attributed their misfortune to “the witch’s curse.”
